Among its goals is even the study and documentation of greek maritime heritage and general culture of love for young people to sea, which fulfills its educational mission of the Museum.   On the 10 large rooms that cover an area of about 1850 sq.m. the naval course of Hellenism through the centuries is being presented in a vivid way.

  • HISTORY OF THE GREEK COSTUME MUSEUM

    Open: Monday-Friday 10.00-14.00   The Museum is closed in August.   Tickets: Free admission The Museum of the History of Greek Costume is an eminently thematic museum with sartorial content. Its collections comprise some 25,000 items, mainly authentic regional costumes and jewelery of historical Greek area (late 19th - early 20th c.), Copies of Minoan, archaic and Byzantine clothing, and 23 porcelain dolls dressed in traditional costumes, which are donated by Queen Olga in the Lyceum of Greek Women. The purpose of its existence is the collection, preservation, study and promotion of the history of Greek local costumes. Its main activity is the organization of periodic thematic exhibitions annually. The aim of such reports is to present a comprehensive, documented the object each time deal. Since its establishment the Museum has organized the 13th thematic reports on Greek local costumes based on their distinguishing features depending on their geographical localization, the ethnocultural groups, the ritual use and representations to art.

  • ILIAS LALAOUNIS JEWELRY MUSEUM

    Open: Tuesday-Saturday: 9.00–15.00 Sunday: 11.00–16.00 On Mondays and National holidays the museum is closed.   Tickets: Full: 5.00€ Reduced: 4.00€   The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum (ILJM) is a centre for international jewelry studies. On permanent display are the creations by Ilias Lalaounis, an Athenian jeweler and goldsmith, elected member to the French Academie des Beaux-Arts. The Museum organises temporary exhibitions on various aspects of modern or antique jewelry and runs a series of educational and culural activities. The permanent exhibition displays 3000 pieces of jewelry and micro-sculpture from 45 collections designed by Lalaounis in the period 1940-1992. They include jewelry inspired by prehistoric art, Bronze Age Greece, Greek jewelry from the Classical and the Hellenistic periods, Byzantium, the art of Persia, the Ottoman Empire and the Far East, as well as creations marking developments in technology and science, from breakthroughs in biology to space travel.

  • JEWISH MUSEUM OF GREECE

    Open: Winter: From the 1st of November until the 31 of March: 8:30-15:00   The Jewish Museum of Greece was founded in 1977 in order to collect, conserve, research and exhibit the material evidence of 2,300 years of Jewish life in Greece. Being a historical and ethnographic museum, the focus of its attention lies in the presentation of a vivid picture of Jewish history and tradition throughout this period.   Its collection, which is constantly being augmented, consists of seven and a half thousand original artifacts, photographs, documents and archives, and includes diverse material pertaining to the domestic and religious life, as well as the historical course of the Greek Jews.

  • MARIKA KOTOPOULI MUSEUM

    Open: Information at tel. 0030 2107775950   The Museum was inaugurated on May, 1990 and constitutes a functional museum of modern art, able to house important exhibitions. The building, erected in 1926, was the holiday home of the great actress of the Greek Theatre, Marika Kotopouli. During the German occupation, the house was requisitioned by the Germans. Later it housed the Police Station of the area. Finally, with the support of the Association of Greek Actors, the Municipality, undertook to restore the house, which was classified as a listed building, and to show off its distinctive architecture and its beautiful interiors, where cultural activities of a high calibre are held today. This Museum does not exhibit objects related to Kotopouli. The building itself is of value as a museum; for the time being it welcomes temporary exhibitions, while it offers a permanent home to the artistic collection of Constantine Ioannides.

  • MINERALOGICAL MUSEUM OF LAVRION

    Open: Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday: 10.00-12.00   Tickets: Full: € 2, Reduced: € 1   In the showcases of the museum there are about 550 (700 from 1500 featuring the museum, according to a report in the newspaper. "Ta Nea") samples of mineral mines of Lavrion exhibited, some of which are only found there. There are metallurgical samples and relatively common minerals (galena, sphalerite, hematite, cerussite etc.) and minerals much more rarely, typical for the region (type locality), as laurionite the serpieritis the ktenasitis the georgiadesitis the thorikositis the kamarizaitis the annabergite etc. The exhibits also include silver coins of the 4th century, made of silver mines, "turtles" lead from ancient times to the last century and tools and equipment the miners who worked there.

  • MUSEUM - ART COLLECTION OF THE NATIONAL BANK

    Open: Winter: November 1-March 31: 08:30-15:00   The art collection of the National Bank began to formed from the time the bank itself was founded in 1841. This collection is considered to be of a museological nature, par excellence, since it includes approximately 1,300 original works by leading 19th and 20th century artists in the fields of painting, sculpture and engraving.   The core of the collection consists of works by the finest of the Munich School, Nikiphoros Lytras, K. Volonakis, N. Ghyzis and others, as well as works of leading sculptors such as I. Kossos, the Fytalas brothers and of their immediate followers M. Tombros, Th. Apartis and others.

A new building was designed and erected for that purpose in the centre of Athens, on 4 Neophytou Douka Str. Since 1991 the Museum has acquired a new wing, the magnificent neo-classical Stathatos House on the corner of Vassilissis Sophias and Herodotou Streets..   The Nicholas P. Goulandris Foundation, to which Dolly Goulandris donated the collection in 1985, is dedicated to the study and promotion of Aegean Studies, and Cycladic culture in particular. The exhibition at the Museum of Cycladic Art, and the temporary exhibitions organised every year, reflect these interests.

  • MUSEUM OF ENGRAVINGS AND GRAPHIC ARTS

    Open: Winter: November 1-March 31: 08.30-15.00   To date, over 3000 works of Greek engravers have been collected, as well as 300 books and other objects related to the field of Graphic Arts. The present administration of the Ionian Bank has already secured a building to house the collection and is proceeding to the foundation of the first Museum of Engravings and Graphic Arts in Greece, which is also the one of the very few in the whole Europe. The Museum is housed in an attractive neoclassical building in Aghias Philotheis Street, near the Cathedral church Athens.   The Museum aims to cover the entire spectrum of modern Greek engraving as well as that of foreign artists who have chosen subjects related to Greece.

  • MUSEUM OF GREEK POPULAR INSTRUMENTS

    Open: Tuesday to Sunday 08:00-15:00 Monday Closed   Tickets: Free admission   About half of the instruments forming the Anoyanakis Collection are on public display. They have been selected on the criterion not only of their aesthetic and decorative value but, in particular, of their ethnological and musicological interest. The remaining instruments are available for research and for travelling exhibitions to be held in schools etc and for occasional exhibitions of a special nature.   The permanent exhibition is spread over three floors and divided into four sections, corresponding to the groups of determined by the material that is made to vibrate in order to produce sound, namely:   - Membranophones (ground floor): Toumbelekia (pottery drums),daoulia (drums), defia (tambourines) - Aerophones (ground floor): Flogeres - souravlia - mandoures (flutes),tsabounes, gaides (bagpipes), zournades (shawms), - Chordophones (first floor): Tambourades, laghouta (long-necked lutes), outia (short-necked lutes), quitars , mandolins, dulcimers etc., - Idiophones: koudounia (bells), massies (tongs with cymbals),simandro (semanterion) etc.

To the right of the entrance, the new wing houses the collection of objects dating from the Prehistoric to the Roman age, while the old building hosts exhibits dating from the Early Christian to the Post-Byzantine age, as well as various exhibits from the Modern age.

The transition from religious, Byzantine painting to secular painting was realized οn the Ιοnian islands; the main character istic, οn the technical side, was the forsaking of egg tempera painting οn wood and the use of oil painting οn canvas, while stylistically the laws and motifs of Western art were adopted. There was a particular flowering of portraiture οn the Ionian islands, but other forms of art such as landscape painting, genre painting and historical painting were also cultivated.

It is the oldest museum of its kind and it includes rich collections, which highlight the most representative phases of Neo-Hellenism, from the fall of Constantinople (15th Century) on. The National Historical Museum is also a research centre for Modern Greek History.

  • PAVLOS KOUNTOURIOTIS MANSION

    Open: June 11-September 30: Tuesday-Sunday: 10.00-13.30 & 18.00-21.00   Pavlos Kountouriotis mansion is located in the west of the port of Hydra, the low hill slope bearing on the top of a small fort. This listed historic building was purchased in 1991 by the Ministry of Culture, to be converted into a museum of the Kountouriotis family and Byzantine and post-Byzantine museum of the art and history of Hydra. The heirs of Admiral and President of the Republic P. Kountouriotis donated all the mobile objects of the mansion to the state.
