A very large percentage of women with breast cancer can escape surgery radical removal of axillary lymph nodes , if subjected to a method of detecting tumor cells in a specific node called " sentinel " lymph node .

With this method the surgeon breast detect whether the cancer has metastasized to the lymph nodes when the patient has to undergo surgery lymphadenectomy . However, if the sentinel lymph node is negative , no detectable tumor cells from the primary tumor , the patient does not need to be removed and the remaining lymph nodes.
