The settlement of Nas is located on the northwest corner of the island's coastline and counts about 50 permanent residents. Many elements allow scholars to believe that Nas was also a major settlement on the island. Indeed, it is believed to have taken its name either from the word Temple or from the word Ma, which was called the goddess Artemis in M. Asia, and her worship came to Ikaria during the post-Minoan times. Thus, a temple dedicated to the Taurus goddess Artemis was built.

In Nas, there was the ancient harbor, stretching from the beach deeply in the gorge of Halaris. There is no communication between the two edges, since the extension to the ravine had been artificially blocked by tree trunks for defense purposes. So, on the side of the beach, a lake has been formed, while the ravine displays lush vegetation with running waters and creates an image of exotic beauty. Today, the ancient waterfront of the port is preserved, as well as, some iron cages that bind the ships.

The Monastery of Agios Dionysios in Zakynthos Town
