The Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens is one of the most important public institutions in Greece, established in the early 20th century (1914) in order to collect, study, preserve and exhibit the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine cultural heritage in the Hellenic territory. The museum collection contains an important number (approximately 30,000) of works of art such as icons, sculptures, ceramics, ecclesiastical textiles, paintings, jewelries and architectural elements (wall paintings and mosaics). The permanent exhibition is divided in two main parts: The first is devoted to Byzantium (4th -15th c. AD) and contains 1200 artifacts and the second entitled “From Byzantium to the modern era” presents 1500 artworks dating from the 15th to 20th century.Category: MUSEUMS

The exhibits have been divided into groups based on the kind of object: mosaics, funerary inscriptions, wall-paintings, icons, architectural sculptures, ceramics and items of minor arts, and coins. The objects in each unit are presented in chronological order. In 1979, the church was donated by the families of Alamanos, Mylonopoulos, Rizikakis and Scarpas, to the Greek state, in order to become a museum. After the necessary restoration of the building, the exhibition was opened to the public in 1984. This two-storey building, on the ground floor of which the central collection of the Museum, which houses finds housed (sculptures, coins, pottery, pictures, sanctuary doors, gospels) from the 4th to the 19th century. This permanent exhibition unfolds in seven rooms that correspond to three exhibition sections (Early Christian, Byzantine, Post-Byzantine) with findings coming from across the continent and is limited to the history and art of the Epirus region during those periods. Branch of the museum is the exhibition of silversmiths, traditional art with distinct boom in Epirus, which hosted the so-called '' treasure ''. Exposed ecclesiastical and secular works from the private collections of Archbishop Spyridon and Giannioti silversmith Constantine Ioannides, has recently been enriched by a series of jewelery and objects donated by Mrs. T. BYZANTINE MUSEUM OF KASTORIA
Open: The Museum will be closed to the public from 1st of August 2013 until the end of 2015 due to renovation works and redisplay of its collections. For the visitable Byzantine churches contact the museum guards. Visiting hours: 08:00-15:00 The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria was founded in 1989 and houses one of the largest collections of Greek Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons of the Ministry of Culture. The museum exhibits paintings of Kastorian temples, mosaics and architectural sculptures (early Christian, Byzantine and Ottoman), church carvings and books from the temples of the city, pottery and coins. The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria has two large rooms of 200 sq.m. and a smaller of 80 sq.m. The space is structured into six sections: the first includes works of 12th-13th century, the second works of the 14th century -15th., the third of the 15th century, the fourth of 16th and 17th c., the fifth works of the Cretan School and the sixth works of 15th and 16th century.Category: MUSEUMS
