Gramvousa Olive Oil Chania - Gramvousa Agricultural Cooperative
The Gramvousa Agricultural Cooperative is based in the westernmost tip of Crete, Chania Prefecture, in the area of Gramvousa and more specifically in the area of Agios Georgios, a village midway from Kissamos to the Balos lagoon and just a few kilometers from Falasarni beach. It is one of the oldest cooperatives in Greece. It consists of 270 member-farmers who are engaged in the production of olive oil (3,000 acres) and fruit and vegetable crops, such as stamnagathi (500 acres), ascolymbra (50 acres) and onion (300 acres). Today it has modern olive oil production and storage facilities, a fully equipped agricultural supply station and a service department to support the professional daily life of its members. THE OLIVE FARM The Agricultural Cooperative of Gramvousa has a modern oil mill with two production lines. Each line consists of an olive fruit receiving hopper, an olive defoliator, an olive fruit washing machine, an olive fruit storage silo, an olive fruit crusher, 10 softeners with a capacity of 1100 kg of olive oil each, a Pieralisi Decanter with a maximum production capacity of 2,500 kg of olive oil and two Pieralisi separators. The olive oil is stored in 9 stainless steel tanks with a total capacity of 560mᶟ, in which a nitrogen filling system has been installed to maintain quality. A temperature measurement and recording system has been installed at all stages of the olive oil production process to ensure optimal quality. Basic chemistry equipment is available, such as a device for measuring the oil content of the fruit, in order to record the yield of the fruit in olive oil from a representative sample and a special spectrograph, to analyze the main organoleptic characteristics of the olive oil (acidity, peroxides, K). The two lines of the olive mill have the capacity to produce conventional and common milled olive oil.
